Behind The Scenes

While filming our video, we took out an extra camera which, thanks to Adam, came up with the great idea of behind the scenes. In my previous project which Perry was a part of as well, we had a behind te scenes, however in this one, becasue there was four of us within the group and a maximum of 2 infront of the camera ant any one time, we kept the camera rolling throughout the majority of the day.

This brought us laughs as we looked back on the footage and also revealed problems and issues that happend while filming. Also, we thought tis was great because it showed exactly how we shot the film, the methods we used to shoot it and who contributed the most and what each of us did. An example of this would be the shot of the locker scene where Perry and Alicea ar having a coversation. This showed how we managed to hide perry in the distant sht and then appear as the camera pans around Alicea. (watch it and you'll see). This example also showed how we all contributed with ideas and who had what tasks like Adam was on the Behind The Scenes camera, i shot the music video using the college camera, as required, and Perry and Alicea were acting.

I have placed some of the BTS (Behind The Scenes) footage below so that anyone can see either to have a laugh or analyse our working methods etc:

Look closely at Josh....We wondered where Adam's clothes went to, they fell down a gap and we couldn't get them back! I think there still there....

Overtime

Also, today as me and Adam stayed in class throughout the day we worked out how we can both contribute to the video at the same time even though we have one computer to edit on. This was that i carry on editing the video as Adam, as he likes to say, "blog's like mad".

We chose this way because i enjoy the editing part of the project and can do it reasonably well and quickly in order to get it done and Adam can then write about what ideas WE came up with on how to edit it. This also gave him the chance to blog any problems, gaps and other issues which will affect our video.

From todays editing, we found that there are some gaps in which we will need to shoot some more footage and perhaps some additional scenes where Adam is too plan tonight ready for next lesson and maybe another.

Another thing we did today was write out notes for a Call Sheet including costumes, props and locations where again we decided that Adam was going to write up a finished one. When doing this, because we will be reshooting some scenes, we had to consider any props which were seen in the shot, costumes which went right down to Alicea's wristband and lighting and/or weather such as the picnic scene. This will need to be carefully planned out so that we do not misuse this time and lose the oppertunity to finish any filming so during next lesson, i will go over the Call Sheet and double check with all of us that e can all attend and speak with our teacher to book out the college equipment when needed.

While Me, Perry and Alicea ar away

Today, me and adam took advantage of any spare time possible we had in order to complete as much of our music video as three of us including myself, have a business studies project and will be missing the following two weeks. However, because this music video is such a big part of our final grade, i will be trying to come into college over those two weeks whenever possible to help Adam with the editing. Also, as this will be the last practical part of our Media Studies course, i want to take the opprtunity to use the equipment and learn as much as possible because this is, i hope, the sort of industry i would like to persue a career in.

We have as a group worked out a plan to help while we are away and this included Adam publishing the video he has worked on on the blog so that we can see it and thegive as much feedback as possible so that we all have an input into this project.

Test Footage

As i intend to persue a career in the film industy, I have been doing deep thorough research towards it such as the jobs roles, tasks, responsibilities, qualifications, equipment, techneques, and even industry terms. This has proven to be a great benifit to our group in many ways for example camera techniques, methods of editing and use of equipment such as the dolly.

Yesterday, as we were taking out the camera and tripod, i suggested we took the college dolly as well to carry out some test footage. Through this, we found that the dolly provides a excellent steady shot on smooth flooring but unfortunately not on carpet, grass or pavement.

This could prove to be a problem when it comes to shooting some of our scenes however we will have to improvise to gain the best looking and most professional footage possible.

To the right is a picture of the dolly in which we used and are going to use in our video to creat moving shots.

With this test footage, we also had a go at different camera angles and camera movement which we could choose to use in our video. This gave us a very good idea of which ones look professional and ones that don't along with bad quality ones and ones that attract the attention of the viewer to the camera which is something we need to avoid in order to produce a good music video.

Planning the camera hire

I gave the permission slip to rent the camera out back to my teacher meaning we could now work out a time and date when we can use the college camera.

Yesterday, we decided as a group that we are going to rent the college camera from Wednesday 1st October at 4:10pm through to Friday 3rd October at 9:00am. we chose this time as it seemed to suit everyone the best giving us maximum time with the camera. We looked at using over a weekend but it worked out we would have had less time togeth menaing it could have caused problems. This way, we have all of thursday, apart from one lesson, where we will film the day scenes. Then during the night to film night scenes where we have nights with the camera.

In addition to the camera, we have chosen to use the camera tripod and the college dolly in which we think will come in very hand as we have many moving shots within our music video. This will be the first time using the dolly because we didn't think to ask if the college had one when film our previous projects.

Pitch

I have posted our pitch slide by slide below so you can get a detailed description of our final idea we have chosen:

Idea research

Following on from my idea, one of the character is a geeky nerd. From one of our previous Media projects, we also had a geeky character in which we thought we could use in this project too. I have pasted the video below:

We thought that this nerdy character is a perfect example of the third character in this music video.

Another Idea

I have come up with an idea which is more of a storyline idea rather then a editing idea. This includes three complete different male characters, one a business man, another a player who always gets the lady's and a third, a geek/nerdy character. Also, a female character as the song is about a man trying to attract a woman. I took the film budget, locations and characters into consideration when i thought of this idea.

The story to the idea was that the woman dates all three men, the business man buys her loads of jewellery, the player is really attractive and the geek has a great personality but cant offer anything else. Then further on in the video, the business man and the player lose her interest such as treating her badly, cheating etc and the video ends with her choosing the geek over them all. The moral is basically 'it's not all about money or looks'

I thought that this was a good idea because some of the lyrics in the song state "I'm no superman, I hope you like me the way i am". This meant that the film would relate to the song lyric and also to the type of song it is. (love song?)

Also, this idea is not too expensive and can be filmed quite easily IN Cambridge such as in a restaurant, bowling alley and other places in Cambridge. Where the jewellery idea comes in, this can simply be a shot of a jewelers window showing the woman and the business man shopping so therefore no jewellery i necessary.

Initial Ideas

We struggled to come up with any sort of decent idea for this song but I have briefly described the small editing idea we did come up with below:

We thought that it would look impressive if we include some sort of picture in picture motion within our video. This idea was influenced by a video we saw on Youtube which was made by a group in Long Road College. This video is shown below:

The main bit in which we want to attempt in our video is 33 seconds into this video. We think this idea would help our video stand out from others meaning that viewers would remember it which is what we want. It would also give a professional touch to it as well.

We are still in the process of coming up with storyline ideas but it is proving harder than we thought. We have one main part which is the video has to be to do with a male and female character as it is going to be a love story.

The song we chose

We narrowed our choice of songs down to two, one of which was Superman by Joe Brooks and another was Curbside Prophits by Jason Mraz. After listening to them both over and over to come up with video ideas, we found that Superman came out with more and better ideas so therefore we have chosen Superman by Joe Brooks.

A little more about Joe Brooks

"At the age of 15 I picked up my first guitar, although old and battered, with a sound that can only be described as dodgy, it proved to be a spark for new inspiration. As a self-taught guitarist, I began by experimenting with my own tunes, whatever sounded good at the time I guess. My inability to read guitar music provoked the creation of new, unique sounds, oh and duff note after duff note.

However, it was a year down the line when I discovered an ability I was unaware existed. I began accompanying the strumming with vocal melodies heavily inspired by an early Jack Johnson in Brushfire Fairytales. Simple yet wonderfully mind-blowing. Lyrically there was to be no stronger influence than the genius of Ben Harper, his words tailored to capture every emotion.

Over the years, what was once a dead-end hobby, has grown to become part of a much bigger dream. One that I will work endlessly to achieve.

Lyric Sheet

Below i have pasted the lyrics to the song we have chosen:

There are no words, to paint a picture of you girl
Your eyes, those curves, it's like you're from some other world
You walk my way, oh God is so frustrating.

So why do I disappear when you come near,
It makes me feel so small,
Why do I blow my lines, most every time,
Like I got no chance at all,

If I could be your superman,
I'd fly you to the stars and back again.
'cause everytime you touched my hand,
You feel my powers running through your veins.
But I can only write this song,
And tell you that I'm not that strong.
'Cause I'm no superman, I hope you like me as I am, oh yeah, aladadadadi

It aint no lie, I have to tell you how I feel,
cause Each time, I try it gets a little more unreal,
you walk my way, oh god its so fustrating

So why do I disappear when you come near,
It makes me feel so small,
If I could read your mind,
Girl would I find, any trace of me at all.

If I could be your superman,
I'd fly you to the stars and back again.
Cause everytime you touched my hand,
You feel my powers running through your veins.
But I can only write this song,
And tell you that I'm not that strong.
Cause I'm no superman, I hope you like me as I am - ladadadi, woahhhh, woahhh, yeah, babadadadiii- ,woahhh, yeah

If I could be your superman,
I'd fly you to the stars and back again.
'Cause everytime you touched my hand,
You feel my powers running through your veins.
But I can only write this song,
And tell you that I'm not that strong.
'cause I'm no supermaaaan,
I hope you like me as I am.
alallladali.

Joe Brooks Research

Below we found a little description Joe wrote about himself and placed on his Myspace. We found this very useful as it provides us with things he likes for example retro clothes and Mustang cars in which we can use within our video. You may need to right click and 'open link' to get a better look in!

We took a look at some previous Long Road music videos along with some love song music videos on Youtube and found a few that we thought we could relate to. Below is a Long Road music video:

This we thought was a particularly good video because it is between a male and a female having an arguement and splitting up, this kept coming up in a lot of our ideas we had for Superman by Joe Brooks.

We also found this music video on Youtube which we thought was a great idea for a video in which we can relate to hugely:
